FORMER Newcastle lad Mikey Robins, pictured, has helped raise almost $40,000 for a local charity.

Last weekend's jazz night for the Nicholas Trust collected almost double the funds organisers expected.

The event, hosted by comedian Robins and featuring jazz greats Galapagos Duck and John Morrison's Swing City, raised $39,500.

The Nicholas Trust has been established by Craig and Jenny Butters after their son Nic passed away in December 2004 at just 14, having suffered from brain tumours since the age of five.

The proceeds will help The Nicholas Trust to establish, in conjunction with Hunter New England Health, a pediatric care facility for dying children and their families in Newcastle, the North Coast and New England regions.

Currently families have to travel to Sydney to find a similar facility.
