THE ever-shrinking Mikey Robins has a few reasons to celebrate this week but he won't be doing it with a glass of champagne.
The Newcastle-born-and-bred comedian will have lost 50 kilograms by the end of this week."I was 148 kilograms five months ago. That was just too big. I was looking at a future of health problems," Robins told The Word yesterday.Robins said he achieved the dramatic weight loss with the assistance of gastric banding, eating less, exercise and "cutting down on the booze".Robins, whose TV career has included appearances on McFeast, Good News Week and The Fat, is also back on the box.He will host the debut episode of Good As Gold, with fellow comedian Jo Stanley, on Prime on Sunday night and will feature on Celebrity Joker Poker on Southern Cross Ten on Tuesday."I wasn't much of a card player. I enjoy it more than I'm good at it," Robins said. While he said poker was supposed to involve a lot of strategy and bluffing, every time he had a good hand, he smiled like a Cheshire cat.Robins is a former member of 1980s Newcastle-based cabaret troupe The Castanet Club, which also included comedian Steve Abbott, and attended Newcastle High School.
