The Sandman was a fixture on the Triple J breakfast show for seven years, alongside Mikey Robins and Paul McDermott.

The man with the monotone appeared on Good News Weekend as a double act with Flacco, aka Paul Livingston, on Channel 10 until 2000.

The Sandman did a memorable impersonation of former Reserve Bank of Australia governor, Bernie Fraser, who was renown for his monotone.

Abbott, a former teaching student at the University of Newcastle, has written five books including The Sandman's Advice To The Unpopular.

Recommended reading: This summer I'm reading bird watching books. I'm reading the Snow Geese and a biography of cricket umpire David Shepherd. I did my umpire training this year.

Recommended TV: I probably will watch the cricket. I've got this new habit of watching movies. I watch the same movie three times. I watch the end of Spider-man first then I watch the middle then the beginning. It's the post-modern way of watching movies.

Recommended movie: I haven't been to the movies for two years. I wouldn't recommended anything. I'm the reason why the Australian film industry is in a dire state at the moment. I'm too lazy and it's hard to get a park.

Recommended music: I'm really getting into country and western and James Reeves. I'm embracing country and western as you do when you get to middle age. I had this thing for Polynesian music. Since I left the Jays I haven't been listening to modern music.

Recommended video: I wouldn't have one because I don't have a video player. I wouldn't recommend one. I'm looking backwards at the moment - the Cruel Sea. Either that or The Graduate.

Dream holiday: Bermagui on the South Coast of NSW. It's a fishing sort of town. I've been there before and I know what to expect.

Favourite pastime: Eavesdropping on the neighbours. It makes me feel like I've got

a social life.
